Clearing Our Client’s Name: RM150,000 Awarded in Defamation Suit Against Former Domestic Worker

Facts:

Have you ever felt frustrated at work and wanted to vent online, maybe without even naming the company directly? This case shows how even seemingly anonymous posts can have serious legal consequences when they harm someone’s reputation.

This case involved serious damage to the reputation of our client, a private company, due to false and defamatory statements made online by a former domestic worker.

The individual was initially hired by the company to carry out household duties. However, the individual left the job suddenly and began posting damaging allegations on social media. Among the false claims were accusations of inhumane treatment and denial of proper rest, none of which were true.

The false statements quickly gained public attention and posed a real threat to our client’s reputation and business prospects.

We represented the company in filing a defamation suit. After hearing the case, the Court awarded our client RM150,000.00 in damages to compensate for the harm caused to its reputation and potential business opportunities.

This outcome serves as a strong reminder that while freedom of speech is protected, spreading falsehoods carries real consequences.
